Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0"

OS: UBUNTU 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)
Kernel: 2.6.28-11-generic
Date: May 25th, 2009

Hi,
Yesterday I was upgrading from 8.10 - Intrepid to 9.04 - Jaunty. And it happened that my command prompt was completely filled with error Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0". It was petrifying I'm not "terminal kinda guy" so whenever I see some error starting with "X", I get bumps. However my computer restarted smoothly without any problem - so I was happy. But when i tried installing one package but that one again filled my terminal with same error.
Anyway here is a quick fix, Just execute
  • sudo apt-get install libxcb-event0
I never got the same error again. Hope this will work for you guys as well

Read - Write permissions for ext3 drive

OS: UBUNTU 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)
Kernel: 2.6.28-11-generic
Date: May 24th, 2009

Hello Everyone,
First thing: Wish you all happy holidays and bashful summer. Exams over :) Time to celebrate. :D
Now about todays post: I just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04, removed Windows drive (boot) completely replaced it with opensolaris(with new boot), formatted my data drive completely changed it to ext3 from ntfs. So in all, did all kinda things with my poor HDD.
So in all this process it happened that the new data drive created - ext3 have only read privilege for me and read write privilege for root. The problem was obvious whenever I try to save something on disk it was error.
Here is just single command which will fix this issue:
  • sudo chmod 777 /path/to/mount/point
  • In my case sudo chmod 777 /media/workspace
Hope you will find this helpful

Compiz working on intel 845 graphics card

Hi everyone,
Yesterday I was chatting with one of my friends and he asked me if I know any way to make compiz working on intel 845. Ubuntu fixed this problem by disabling compiz for i845 - maybe due to lack of computing (graphics) power. However without compiz its not much a fun as well. So I looked around a little bit and found a post of Ubuntu forums to make it work. I have never faced this problem as I've i865. So will just redirect you to that post. If anyone of you try it then put a comment.
